Derek Obermeyer


Derek Obermeyer is the Owner of The Zone Training facilities, and established the first facility in 2005. Derek graduated from Conestoga College with a diploma in Accounting and started his career by gaining experience in the construction industry and as Financial Controller at Rebel Creek Golf Club.

Derek has been involved in local minor hockey for many years, beginning as a player in Kitchener Minor Hockey and as a coach within the Waterloo Minor Hockey Association at the AA and AAA levels for 6 years.

As a goaltender, Derek was drafted by the London Knights of the OHL after playing for the Kitchener Greenshirts in 1996. He started his Jr B career in Guelph before joining his hometown Kitchener Dutchmen, where he was selected as scholastic player of the year in 1999. In 2000 Derek was part of the Cambridge Winterhawks winning the Sutherland Cup as Ontario Jr. B Champions.

Cindy Eadie

Cindy completed her Economics degree at Wilfrid Laurier University and is currently in charge of day-to-day operations at The Zone Training.

She has over 25 years of hockey experience, including 9 years as an elite goaltending coach for numerous goaltenders at the AAA, PWHL, CIS, and NCAA levels. During her career as a goaltender, Cindy backstopped Wilfrid Laurier University to a national championship in 2005 and the Brampton Thunder (Canadian Women's Hockey League) to two championships in 2007 and 2008.  Cindy served as the head coach of the K-W Rangers (PWHL) Hockey Club for three seasons (2011-2014).

Cindy was also a member of the Canadian Softball team from 2001-2006, where she competed in a number of international competitions. The most notable of those competitions is the Olympic Games in 2004 (Athens, Greece).

Whitney Eastwood


Whitney comes to the Zone with over 15 years of coaching experience.  She has her High Performance Level 1 Certification through Hockey Canada and has been a part of provincial High Performance Programs with the Ontario Womens Hockey Association and Hockey New Brunswick. She has coached various levels of hockey from minor hockey (Cambridge Girls Hockey Association) to the university level (University of Guelph and St. Francis Xavier University women’s programs).

Whitney played university hockey with the St. Francis Xavier X-Women hockey team of the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) Conference. During her playing and coaching career with the X-Women she won three AUS Championships, two as a player and one as an assistant coach, as well as four CIS National Championship appearances.

Michael Cinelli


Michael grew up in Toronto and played minor hockey with the York Toros, Mississauga Jets, Toronto Red Wings, and St. Mike's Majors. He moved on to play 2 years of Jr. C. with the New Hamburg Spirit '83.

Michael has over 20 years of coaching experience targeting skill levels that range from fundamentals to elite varsity hockey teams.  He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Phys. Ed. at Wilfrid Laurier University.  

Nick Magyar


Nick grew up in Cleveland, Ohio playing hockey for the AAA Cleveland Barons. Nick then moved onto play for the Kitchener Rangers in the Ontario Hockey League for three full seasons all before getting drafted to the Colorado Avalanche in the NHL.

He has several years of teaching and assisting around the hockey world as he taught multiple lessons for individuals and teams back home in Cleveland.

Nick is now studying at Wilfrid Laurier University getting his undergraduate in Honors Business Administration.

Ryan Takamatsu

Head instructor

Ryan grew up in Mississauga playing rep hockey while growing up. He then played Jr. A for the North York Rangers and Georgetown Raiders in the OJHL, winning the Buckland Cup while playing for Georgetown. He is currently in his second year at Wilfrid Laurier for Communications with a Business Management Option. His first year in town he played Jr. B for the Elmira Sugar Kings, acheiveing over 40 points that season.

Anthony Saldutto


Anthony grew up in Toronto playing hockey in the Greater Toronto Area playing rep hockey for various A, AA, and AAA teams. He has since moved to the Waterloo area where he is an active member in the community. Anthony has over 15 years of coaching and instructor experience, working with kids and adults of all ages and skill levels.

Anders Adzija

Head instructor

Anders grew up in St Thomas and spent minor hockey with the Chiefs and London Jr Knights organizations. He completed grades 9-10 at the PEAC hockey academy, with 3 current NHL players as classmates. His Junior hockey career involved playing at the Jr B level for both the Waterloo Siskins, and St Thomas Stars whom he grew up watching every Sunday as his hometown team. He have always loved the idea of getting involved in the hockey community after finishing playing and thoroughly enjoys the coaching aspect. Having received his Hockey Canada Level 1 coaching certification, he helped coach the Special Olympics, and the Port Stanley Timbits. He is currently at the University of Waterloo studying Business, and minoring in Political Science.

Taytum Clairmont

Head instructor

Taytum grew up in Waterloo, playing her minor hockey career in town. Taytum then moved to Boston to play division 1 hockey at Northeastern University. Currently, she is at the University of Waterloo completing her Masters while playing for the university hockey team.

She has she trained with some of the top on-ice instructors in Canada and has applied what she has learned from them to her work at The Zone. She has several years of teaching and assisting individual and group lessons locally at all levels mainly focusing on power skating, shooting and skills.

Kyle Sephton

Head Goaltender Instructor

Kyle has 8 years of experience coaching goaltenders are we are thrilled to have him join our staff!  He played his minor hockey in Guelph and trained at the Zone as a young goalie and then moved on to play at the Jr B (St. Mary's & Listowel) and Jr C (Burford Bulldogs) levels.  Kyle is currently attending University of Guelph with a major in Criminal Justice and Public Policy and minor in Sociology. Last season Kyle played for the Senior AA Shallow Lake Crushers and attended the Goalie Guilds "Rocky Mountain Mentorship Camp" learning from some of the most recognized goalie instructors around the world.
